A New Ship’s Ballast Water Treatment System

08.14.2008
HHI has developed a ballast water treatment system for ships, tentatively named EcoBallast, which will protect marine environment from the transfer of foreign species via ballast water. The International Conventions for the Control and Management of Ship’s Ballast Water and Sediments were adopted at a Diplomatic Conference of the IMO (International Maritime Organization) in February of 2004. Following the ratification, ballast water treatment system has to be used aboard all ships.

EcoBallast is composed of two main units, the filter and the UV reactor. The system is controlled by programmable logic controller, which is installed in the control panel. The filter can significantly reduce the sediment load in the ballast water. The UV reactor was specially designed for this ballast water treatment application to reduce footprint and to maximize the efficiency of the system. EcoBallast meets all IMO guidelines. The system is a chemical-free system; it does not use or produce any chemicals, avoiding potential harm to ship, the ship’s ballast tank coating, the crew, and the marine environment. Performance, corrosion, vibration, and reliability tests have all been successfully passed by EcoBallast. Land-based and shipboard approval tests will be performed by 2009.
